A Devotional on Justice

TDC Core Value - Justice - Connecting with needs of our city and world

Psalm 6:2-3

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint;
O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish.
How long, O Lord, how long?

We ask the Lord, How long? We see the headlines and the outrage on social media and we ask, “How long, Lord? We see the crumbling creation and the exploitation and we ask, “How long, Lord?” We see the pain of loss and the suffering of the mind and we ask, “How long, Lord? The Lord knows what He has promised and He does not delay in bringing these things to pass. His timing, however, operates much differently from ours, as He looks upon us, taking into account all people on Earth and their hearts. To us, He seems slow in bringing forth the completion of His justice. Yet, the Lord must take time, as the hearts of people require such.

2 Peter 3:9 says The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Our Lord desires repentance. He desires salvation. Salvation & repentance take time. How quick are we to confess our sins, even when we know and love Jesus? How slow then is the world that does not know Him? Still, we hope. More than hope, we have faith. We believe that the Lord will keep His promise to make all things right on Earth.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, remind us that You are faithful and You do not leave us. Remind us that Your heart is full, knowing the injustice that plagues our earth, both seen and unseen by us. Lord Jesus, remind us that You are good, even when our world seems full of darkness. Lord, remind us that You are in control, even our world appears to be in chaos. We submit to You, Lord, knowing that You will fulfill Your promise of bringing justice to this Earth. God, open our hearts to see the ways we contribute to injustice each day that we cannot see. Lord, reveal to us how You would have us change to live a more just and honoring life. God, renew our strength to face each day and give us the capacity to love one another, as we wait for You to bring all to repentance.

Reflect:

1. What situations have caused you to cry out, “How long, Lord?

2. What does it look like for you to live a more just and honoring life to God? How does this influence the way you live your life, spend your money, and give your time?

3. How would God have you proceed in bringing forth a more just world?
